#AskAwayFriday with Sonya K

I actually am getting a LITTLE ahead in my blogging… meaning that if all goes well, I’ll be enjoying a nice weekend out of town when this goes live with my family, while my kiddos are on Spring Break. I’m so happy to be able to get to this point, where my groove is actually sticking for more than a couple of days! With that said, I love this part of my week, where I get to share a little bit more about myself as I answer some questions for Ask Away Friday.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with #AskAwayFriday it’s an amazing way to meet new bloggers, make friends and ask some questions to get to know them better! We now have four permanent hosts ~ Penny at The Real Housewife of Caroline County, Tiffany at Mrs. Tee – Love, Life, and Laughter, Amber at Bold Fab Mom and Stacey at This Momma’s Ramblings. 10 questions are exchanged and answered on your partners blog, you can get as creative as you want and even get into our purses!

This is my Week 10 of #AskAwayFriday where I spill my guts to all of you!

Check them all out!

This week, I’m pairing with the savings queen, Miss Sonya K from Saving Everyday with Sonya K! She has two darling kids and works to put up at least three awesome deals everyday! You really should go take a look and save a few dollars for yourself!

I read that you can sing, so here are a few singing questions.

1. I have seen a couple of recent episodes of The Voice. If you auditioned for The Voice what song would you sing?

Ah, you are going right for the jugular, literally and figuratively. I can and do enjoy to sing, but am seriously out of practice. I can sing a lot of songs, but I really have never found “the one” that I think I sound great and actually shows my range. But for fun, I’ll give you my “The Voice” non-audition.

I was going to post a “non-audition” here, but man, I’m so out of practice. I haven’t really sung since I got pregnant with Ms. B. However, I promise, I’ll get you a sample soon… so you can be the judge!

2. All four judges (Adam Levine, Shakira, Usher, Blake Shelton) want you on their team. Who would you choose and why?

You know, I don’t really watch the show **hangs head**, I think I’m somewhat jealous of the confidence they have to try out. I think I would actually choose Blake. I think he’s talented and it would stretch my style and voice. It seems like he’d be really nice. I have no idea if he’s a good coach though.

3. Did you grow up singing in a choir? If so, what type of choir(s) did you sing with?

I sang in school choirs, show choir, college gospel choir and church choirs as an adult. Basically, as an adult, it’s all been through church. It’s really hard to join a band when you have three kids and no support. Since we moved closer to family and support, maybe I’ll try to find one around here.

4. Whose singing voice do you admire the most?

There are so many – of course the classics, like Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. But I also appreciate someone like Fantasia who has a bit of a raspy voice, but really rocks it. I love and miss voices like Luther Vandross, since it seems like men either sing like girls or rap these days. My favorite gospel singer is Karen Clark Sheard.

I know you are starting to cook more so here are some food questions.

5. I have been enjoying eating 85% Cacao Bars lately. What is your favorite semi-healthy indulgence?

I don’t have a set one. It can range from a nonfat frozen yogurt to fruit.

6. Is there a recipe or dish that you would like to make but are afraid to try to cook?

I’m surprised that I have ones that I like to cook. I’m what I call a shy cook. I’ll only cook new recipes for my husband because I don’t like rejection or the dislike from other people. I’ve been hesitant to cook pretty much anything outside of my wheelhouse: baked chicken, spaghetti, hamburgers. I’ve just really started experimenting this past year, so there are plenty of things that I’m afraid to cook. I will have to say, anything that’s expensive to purchase and cannot afford to “mess up”, like prime cuts of meat, seafood, or saffron.

7. I don’t eat a lot of meat, but beef is my favorite. What is your favorite meat to eat?

Seafood, but my husband isn’t that much of a fan, so we rarely eat it. I love a good steak though. There’s nothing bad when you can literally cut your steak with a butter knife because the quality of the meat is so good and it’s cooked just perfectly!

Questions about your recent move.

8. You recently moved to be closer to your husband’s family. What do you like most about living in Florida?

Being closer to family. It’s nice having plans on the weekend that I can afford to go to… LOL… chilling at their house or a potluck or whatnot, even if I don’t really want to go. IN California, we rarely went anywhere because my friends schedules conflicted with mine and it was too expensive to go out to dinner.

9. What do you miss most about living in California?

Things to do. I’m sure I’m not being nearly as ambitious enough, but in California there are plenty of indoor and outdoor things to do on any given day – free and paid. There was this fountain at the mall, that during the day the kids would play in that cooled them down during the warm weather. They have the same things here, but they are so far apart, so much farther to drive. I really miss the playgroup that I was a part of in California too. Now they are doing monthly brunches since our kids are older (in the 9-11 year old range).

10. There was a mild earthquake in the L.A. area this week. Have you ever experienced an earthquake? If so, how bad was it?

Sure, I’ve experienced lots. Some big and some small. I was about 30 miles away from the Northridge quake, one that tore up our area. Most houses in California are retrofitted so besides some broken glasses, we didn’t get hit hard. Most of them, the house just sways a bit, maybe a little rumbling, like a big truck rolling past. They really aren’t that scary, once you’ve been there. Most have no fatalities and often if they are fatalities they are heart attacks from the fear, not from buildings falling. Since I’ve experienced Hurricane Wilma (almost as powerful as Katrina in the same year, but in Florida), I can say that hurricanes are way more scary.

(1) You know it’s coming. It means you can prepare, but it also makes you anxious as you sit and wait for it to hit wondering whether you should’ve left or how much damage it’s going to do.

(2) It lasts a LOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNGGGGGGG time. Most earthquakes last less than 10 seconds, a hurricane can last an hour and the world completely stops while it’s passing by.

(3) Damage is often limited to close to the epicenter – where the center of the earthquake happened. Since a hurricane is moving, it can cause damage up and down, including throwing debris at things.

So, I’m sure I wrote way more than you were expecting on most of those questions, but they are great questions! Thanks for hooking up with me Sonya! Head over to her place at Saving Everyday with Sonya K to see her questions for me.

  1. Hey April, thanks for partnering up with me this week. I enjoyed answering your questions. I can't wait to hear your audition. I've never bought saffron either it's way too expensive. I think the last time I checked it was $13 for a few threads. That's not in my budget. I've been in one small earthquake in Atlanta my senior year of college. I happened during the early morning hours and I felt like someone was shaking me. Hurricanes and tornadoes sound really scary to me.

    • I did buy saffron once for this recipe. I can't lie, the dish came out perfectly! It was REALLY expensive. The one good thing is saffron keeps for a long time, if stored properly and you use SO little in a recipe that you can make quite a few dishes with it. Makes it just a little easy to digest. Yep, a little shaking is pretty much all you experience in California. Now, if you live elsewhere, I can't promise the same.

  2. I remember the crazy earthquake we had here in Maryland that pretty much went up from VA to NY. It was crazy. My first and only time ever experiencing anything like that.

    • I think if you live in Cali, you get used to it. The strength varies, but overall, the consequences tend to be minimal, no matter how much noise people make about it.

    • LOL! And that list will get longer! I really like listing them. I will record something one of these days. I'm surprised I don't have a solo recording somewhere, only with others.
